Wire Rod Costs Climb Across Asia and the U.S. While Chinese List Prices Hold Steady
Oct 18, 2026 · Brynick Newsroom, Ningbo

Induction-furnace-route wire rod (5.5 mm) offers across major producing locations in India jumped sharply, rising by as much as INR 4,000 per tonne (reported by BigMint as roughly $54/t) on 18 October. BigMint cited better downstream demand and a surge in sponge iron costs as the drivers. Wire rod is the principal raw material for wire partitions, wire containers and wire decking, so the increase feeds directly into production costs across the region.
In the United States, cost pressure is building through the scrap channel. U.S. mills were paying $10–30 per gross ton premiums for most grades of October scrap versus September levels in the Midwest and Southeast, according to SteelOrbis. Commercial Metals Corporation posted a rebar increase of about $40 per net ton ($2.00/cwt) in the Western U.S., with other regional mills expected to follow CMC's lead on dwindling western spot supply. U.S. domestic ex-mill wire rod remained steady at $50.00–51 per cwt ($1,000–1,020/nt), with traders describing supply as "reasonably balanced." The U.S. domestic rebar average stood at $46.50–47.50/cwt ($930–950/nt), up from $46.00–47/cwt earlier.
In contrast, Chinese list prices were steady. Baosteel's November 2026 domestic futures price announcement, published 10 October and reported by Shanghai Metals Market, held the base price for wire rod unchanged, alongside flat prices for hot-rolled, cold-rolled, hot-dip galvanized and coated products.
For international buyers of wire storage products, the near-term picture is one of rising raw material costs outside China while Chinese mill lists remain stable. Whether the cost increases pass through to finished wire product quotations in the coming weeks will depend on mill margins and order backlogs; buyers placing autumn orders may wish to confirm pricing validity periods with their suppliers. Note: the India figures are based on BigMint's published summary, as full transaction-level detail is subscription-restricted, so per-location and per-mill breakdowns could not be independently confirmed.
