U.S. Steel Prices Hit Four-Year High as Tariffs Reshape Import Costs
Oct 17, 2026 · Brynick Newsroom, Ningbo

U.S. steel prices have surged to their highest level in four years, with hot-rolled coil—the benchmark for American steel prices—reaching $1,255 per short ton, according to Bloomberg reporting published October 16, 2026. That marks the highest reading since May 2022 and a rise of more than 50% from a year earlier. For buyers and suppliers of steel-intensive products worldwide, the escalation is a direct consequence of the U.S. tariff regime: 25% sectoral duties on imported steel, aluminum and copper were imposed in March 2025, then raised to 50% for steel and aluminum in June 2025, with the same rate applied to copper from July 2025.
The duties are reshaping trade flows. U.S. imports of finished steel totaled about 13 million tons in the first nine months of 2026, down 14% from the same period a year earlier, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute. Imported finished steel accounted for just 16% of the total U.S. market over January–September, down from 19% a year earlier. Bloomberg noted that U.S. hot-rolled coil now costs roughly 1.5 times European prices and about three times Chinese prices, placing the United States among the most expensive steel markets in the world.
Pressure is expected to intensify in the near term. U.S. steel mills are scheduled to begin year-end maintenance, which analysts expect to tighten supply further and keep prices elevated. For manufacturers of wire products and storage equipment—such as wire partitions, wire containers, wire decking and racking systems—steel prices remain the single largest cost driver, and the widening U.S.–Europe–Asia price gap is likely to shift sourcing decisions and quotation strategies through early 2027.
